Neuroscience
Neuroscience applied to human resources and leadership refers to the use of knowledge about how the brain and the nervous system work. The aim is to improve engagement and leadership practices. This approach sets out to understand how brain processes influence behaviour, decision-making, motivation, communication and collaboration.
Things are very clear. It is harder and harder to work as a speaker, facilitator or consultant without following the latest discoveries in neuroscience closely. Even if most of the time they only confirm what we already knew, which is that you have to repeat a message for it to be heard, sleep well and offer social interaction. And the great classic: meditation is good and stress is bad.
The request from clients who want to organise a talk is simple. They want a short session whose effects last over time, delivered by a competent expert who can explain the content in plain terms while staying interactive and engaging.
And there you have two choices. Either you sell a product that everyone would like to own. In that case there is no problem, and you take your inspiration from Elon Musk or Steve Jobs. I would not advise that, because you are neither Tesla nor Apple, and that is just as well. Or you work on your presentation to adapt it to your audience. Make sure you offer the right format of information (speech, image or video) at the right moment.
Neuroscience in action
To reconcile these contradictions, I have built 2 elements into my sessions so that I hold the attention of my audience in a keynote or a workshop: gamification and neuroscience. To do that, I take the following into account:
Stories to create engagement
Neuroscience has shown that our brain is wired for stories. When we listen to a story, the brain areas linked to language activate, and so do the areas linked to the experiences described in the story. For example, if a story talks about running, the brain areas associated with movement activate as well. That is why so many speakers use storytelling in place of plain facts. It creates an emotional connection with the listener and strengthens engagement.
This connection is amplified by the release of oxytocin, a hormone linked to empathy and trust. Telling stories makes information more memorable and more engaging.
Exercises to activate the salience network
The salience network acts as a gatekeeper for our brain, deciding what deserves our attention. By offering interactive exercises, I call on this network and let participants filter and focus on the relevant information. These exercises can take the form of quizzes, group discussions or simulations. Activating the salience network makes sure the information presented is received, and also judged relevant and worth remembering.
Questions to sustain the attention network
The attention network is essential for learning. It lets you focus on a specific task or a specific piece of information by filtering out distractions. Asking questions engages this network actively, because it requires participants to think, to analyse and to answer. That turns participants from passive spectators into active players in their own learning. Starting a session with questions also sparks curiosity and sets the scene for engaged learning.
Maximum personalisation to support engagement
Every individual is unique, with their own experiences, knowledge and perspectives. By personalising the content of the session, I make sure it resonates with each participant. Adapting what I say to the reactions and the questions of the audience, instead of following a rigid plan, makes the session more relevant and more engaging. It also shows participants that their contribution is valued, which strengthens their engagement.
Workshops based on exercises and feedback
Learning is an active process. To strengthen the acquisition of new skills or new knowledge, putting them into practice is essential. That is why I leave training courses to others and instead I run workshops and masterclasses ! Exercises let participants test their new knowledge in a safe environment. Giving immediate feedback after these exercises reinforces the learning. Dopamine, released when a task is completed successfully, creates a positive association with learning.
By breaking the session into micro-sessions, each stage becomes a learning opportunity, which strengthens the engagement and the satisfaction of participants.
Using neuroscience in my sessions
Improving decision making
Neuroscience has shown that our brain constantly scans for risks and rewards, which shapes our decision-making process. Specific brain areas, such as the prefrontal cortex, play a crucial role in rational decisions. By understanding these mechanisms, leaders can become more aware of their own biases and make more balanced decisions.
By recognising how the brain processes information, leaders can also structure discussions and presentations in a way that makes understanding and retention easier, so their teams can make informed decisions.
Optimising training and development
Traditional training methods are not always effective, because they take no account of the way the brain learns best. Neuroscience has revealed that learning is optimised when information is presented interactively, with pauses for reflection and practical application.
Repetition, variety in teaching methods and an emotional connection with the content also strengthen memory and understanding. HR professionals can use this knowledge to design training programmes that match the way the brain naturally works.
Strengthening motivation
Motivation is deeply rooted in our biology. Neurotransmitters such as dopamine play an essential role in the feeling of reward and motivation. By understanding these mechanisms, managers can put in place recognition and reward systems that match the neurological needs of employees.
Neuroscience also shows that clarity of goals, the perception of autonomy and a sense of belonging can increase intrinsic motivation. Leaders can therefore strengthen motivation by creating a working environment where these elements are present.
Improving communication
Effective communication is essential for organisational success. Neuroscience teaches us that our brain prefers stories to raw facts, because stories engage our emotional brain more deeply. Leaders can therefore use storytelling to make their messages more memorable and more persuasive.
The brain also filters information constantly to work out what is relevant. Leaders therefore need to be clear, concise and relevant in their communication so that their messages are heard and remembered.
Managing stress and wellbeing
Chronic stress can have harmful effects on the brain, affecting memory, decision making and even physical health. Neuroscience has identified strategies, such as meditation and mindfulness, that can help reduce the impact of stress.
Companies can use this knowledge to put in place wellbeing programmes that support the mental health of employees. By understanding how the brain reacts to stress, leaders can also adapt their management style to create a calmer and more supportive working environment.
Encouraging transformational leadership
Transformational leadership goes beyond simply managing tasks and inspires and motivates teams to reach their full potential. Neuroscience shows that leaders who demonstrate empathy and understanding can create deeper connections with their teams, which strengthens trust and collaboration.
By understanding how the brain processes visions and aspirations, leaders can also communicate more effectively and inspire their teams to pursue bigger goals and to surpass themselves.
