Running a VUCA workshop for Outdoor Sports Valley (OSV)
A turning point towards resilience and agility through the VUCA approach.

- challenges
These challenges matter a great deal in making the training work and in making sure participants leave with practical tools they can apply in their own working context. Here are some of the main challenges.
Adapting the VUCA concepts. Adapting the VUCA concepts to an audience that is mainly HR, and not necessarily familiar with the jargon of strategic leadership. These concepts have to be broken down into simple and clear terms, with concrete and relevant examples that connect with the daily experience of participants. Case studies, scenarios and practical exercises help make the concepts more accessible and easier to understand.
Keeping the workshop engaging and relevant. The workshop had to be engaging and relevant for a network of companies whose culture is strongly oriented towards practice and sustainability. That means tailoring the content of the training to the specific needs of participants, and including elements directly linked to their roles and responsibilities within their own organisations. Interactive sessions, group discussions and practical activities all help keep participants engaged throughout the workshop.
Turning theory into quick action. Turning the theory into concrete actions that participants could put in place immediately. That calls for practical tools, strategies and specific advice that can be applied in the working context of participants. Follow up after the training also helps, both to make sure participants apply what they learned and to give them ongoing support.
Guidance on the challenges specific to the network. Finally, participants needed guidance so they could address, in a VUCA context, the specific challenges that organisations such as Outdoor Sport Valley come up against. That means helping them identify and analyse the particular problems they face, and giving them effective strategies for dealing with them.
- stakes
Running a workshop on the VUCA world for a mixed group of participants, coming from different French cities and holding a range of roles in their own companies, raises several issues. Understanding them is essential in making the workshop work and in making sure every participant gets as much as possible out of it.
Working with differences in role, company and values. Geographical spread adds a further layer of complexity. An inclusive environment has to be created, where every participant feels valued and heard. Team building activities and open discussion sessions help break down barriers and build better understanding and collaboration between participants.
Securing the future of the network. Participants need the skills and the tools to work effectively in this fast moving environment. The focus has to be on building resilience, flexibility and the ability to adapt, so the network can continue and grow despite changing challenges.
Building a culture of innovation and adaptability. The workshop had to include specific sessions on innovation techniques and strategies, and on how to instil a mindset of adaptability among participants. That helps them stay at the forefront of their sector and promote a culture of continuous innovation within their own organisations.
Strengthening leadership and strategic decision making. Leadership training sessions, case studies and simulations help participants sharpen their leadership skills and make better informed, more strategic decisions.
Initial assessment: finally, an initial assessment through interviews with the executive team and the head of HR for the network is essential in understanding the specific challenges of the network and adapting the content of the workshop accordingly. This preliminary step makes sure the workshop is finely tuned to the specific needs and expectations of participants, which gives it the greatest possible impact.

- results
This work on the VUCA world paid off, with a series of positive results that strengthened the position of the participating companies in a business environment that is increasingly unpredictable and complex.
Greater awareness. One of the most significant results of the workshop was greater awareness among members of the value of adopting a VUCA mindset in the way they manage and run their business. That awareness let participants recognise the need to build a VUCA approach into their strategy and their decision making, which supports the durability and the resilience of their company in the face of the changing challenges of business today.
A strategic roadmap. Participants also worked on a strategic roadmap for bringing VUCA principles into the daily operations and the long term initiatives of their companies. That roadmap serves as a guide for applying the VUCA concepts effectively, and makes sure each company is well placed to work successfully in a VUCA environment.
More confident HR leaders. The workshop also helped raise the confidence of the HR leaders and company leaders present when they face unpredictability. Armed with new tools and strategies, they are now better prepared to react, to adapt and to lead their teams with assurance in a VUCA context, which strengthens the stability and the resilience of their organisations.
Positive feedback and a special invitation. Feedback on the workshop was strongly positive, with several participants saying they wanted to go further into the VUCA concepts and explore other leadership training. That response also led to a special invitation to speak on regenerative management at the annual OSV seminar in Annecy, which was a further chance to share VUCA thinking and strategies with a wider audience.
